Is it okay to use AI to write your school reports?
I absolutely HATE writing school reports. I leave it to the last minute and then have to spend hours working through a massive (electronic) pile of them.
Hence this term I started using the AI software at Report Genie, Some AI report writers are utter rubbish and appear to use a database of about 20 phrases, which makes all the reports sound the same and very artificial. Others that come from the US use a lot of Americanisms (when would I write "Great job!" in a report?). However, Report Genie produces reports that are reasonably unique to each child and uses language that is more akin to what we use on my side of the pond. Reports can be quickly produced by clicking on a few buttons of some set phrases and you can add more phrases to make it more unique to you - try it out yourself. Yes, I still have to tweak the reports before I upload them onto my school's MS, but it's definitely saved me a lot of time.
A quick trick to spot any phrases that have been repeated for multiple students: I upload a Word doc of the class's reports onto ChatGPT and type in the following prompt:
"You are an expert maths teacher and report writer. The attached document contains 16 reports. I want you to analyse the reports and tell me if any reports contain sentences that are the same in other reports. I want you to tell me about any sentences with a similarity rating of 0.75 or more and which reports they are in. Ignore names i.e. the the two sentences "David has worked really hard this term" and "Peter has worked really hard this term" can be considered as matching"
Then, for any matching phrases ChatGPT has spotted, I get it to suggest some alternative phrases for me and copy and replace them into the reports. Bosh! Sorted!
Is this cheating? I don't think so - you still need to know how each of your students is performing before you click on the phrases you want to use. Clicking random buttons would be cheating, pointless, and easily spotted by my SLT who have told us we can't use AI to write our reports. AI tools should be making our working lives easier and I believe this is just one way that they can.
